Legen-wait-for it-dary Comic Book Highlights of the Week 7/15/09

Cover of the Week: New Mutants #3 (50s Variant)
Overall Marvel has done an excellent job with all of these 50s/60s/70s covers that they have been releasing as variants. And I like this New Mutants #3 50s cover as reminiscent of the style of that time period.

Amazing Spider-Man #599 Highlights
Aw, some brotherly love.

I got to say I really enjoyed the whole fight between Harry and Norman. And I like how great the armor of both characters looked great throughout the issue, even with a artist by committee.

Damn, that is freaking harsh Norman. Screwing and impregnating your son's ex-fiance is not cool. Not cool at all Norman!

Holy crap! Aunt May not only has a Twitter but also a Facebook. This has to be one of the signs of the apocalypse.

How much you want to bet as soon as Lily gives birth to Norman's new son that Norman will kill Lily?

Batman: Streets of Gotham #2 Highlights
I guess all that build up to Black Mask's return as a big player in Gotham during Battle for the Cowl was for nothing as he got pwned by Firefly in this issue.

No one likes back seat drivers Batman, especially Firefly! To bad Batman didn't get that note as he takes control of Firefly's suit and flies him into a Penguin billboard.

That is one super generous donation by a Hush impersanting Bruce Wayne. Will be interesting seeing how Dick deals with yet another problem that is added to the mountain of problems he is dealing as Batman.

This is from the Manhunter back-up to this issue and I am interested to see were this story between Manhunter and Jane Doe goes down.

Blackest Night #1 Highlights
Even with all of the problems with Blackest Night the one thing I could not complain about was Ivan Reis artwork. His artwork was phenomenal. And this page was both awesome and sick with the Black Lantern rings flying out to find host and Black Hand licking Bruce Wayne's skull.

A great spread of the four characters that should be the stars of Blackest Night.

No Fear huh? Well we will how much bravery the people of Earth show when the dead rise from the grave.

See what happens when you are away from the DCU for a few years. You miss out on so many deaths.

This and one other small panel is all we get to show us that the War of Lights has actually started. Johns better place more of a focus on the War of Lights in the next issue.

WOW! Scar goes cannibal on all of her fellow Guardians.

Can you name all of the dead characters seen on this spread page?

I got to admit that I like this new look for Martian Manhunter. It is so much more bad ass than when he was alive.

Thank you Ralph and Sue. I couldn't take any more of the will they, won't they crap between Hawkman and Hawkgirl.

Captain America #601 Highlights
Even though there were parts in the issue that I did not like on the art side of things I really like this quick origin story that the legendary Gene Colan drew.

Gene Colan did a great job making all of the action in this WWII setting look both dark and creepy.

Superman/Batman #62 Highlights
Man, you do not want to go sightseeing with Supergirl.

Paging Dr. Joker your help is need in room 2B.

This is one tea party you do not want to be a part of.

Lilly's face was priceless. And I agree, the second that baby is out of the womb and cleaned off she'll get to pet it's head and then Norman will take it and throw her off a bridge. Or snap her neck. probably the bridge though. It's like a fetish for him or something. And you're right it looks like Sin's Past is wiped clean, thank the comic gods.

I loved Firefly in this week, he was such a badass. He should have toasted that Black Mask wannabe.

It was so cool seeing Dick make Firefly fall through a billboard. that's pretty brutal, I wonder if Dick will be pushed to do more brutal stuff in the future.

@Andrenn: Hmm, now that I think about it we haven't a a bridge scene since the start of Brand New Day. Good way to bring the bridge back in Amazing Spider-Man.

With everything that Dick has to deal with as Batman there is no doubt he will have to adopt a more brutal fighting style. Right now we are still seeing him use the same fighting/showman style he used as Nightwing. I think if we give it time, it has only been a few weeks (DC time) that Dick has been Batman. So he is still trying to work out all of the kinks to see what he needs to do to make the identity of Batman his own.
